Collaborative project: Brackish water-based multitrophic cultivation systems for sustainable, demand-driven and local food production - Subproject D (muKs)
Project
Project code: 2815803D23
Contract period: 01.02.2026
- 31.03.2029
Budget: 51,067 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: algae, aquaculture, marine organisms, sustainability, process engineering, value chains, other aquatic organisms
The transition to sustainable agriculture requires innovative approaches such as protected production methods, vertical systems, a circular bio-economy and smart control of production processes. However, these modern production methods are associated with several challenges (e.g. energy consumption, equipment costs, producer prices, degree of mechanisation, use of sustainable materials). It is therefore necessary to develop new sustainable production systems or to combine existing methods in a way that minimises conflicts between the three dimensions of sustainability: ecology, economy and society. One example is the integration of multitrophic aquaculture and aquaponics into a multitrophic culture system (MTS). The overall objective of this proposal is therefore the design, construction and use of sustainable, easy-to-use and modular muKs for the coupled production of tropical marine animals and terrestrial plants that can be operated in existing buildings.
