Model and demonstration project: Demonstration farms for integrated crop production in the field of open field vegetables (MuD IPB FG)
Project
Project code: 2825ABS110
Contract period: 01.05.2026
- 30.04.2029
Budget: 441,071 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: irrigation, fertilization, horticulture, vegetable production, crop protection, plant health, precision farming, knowledge transfer, networking
The primary objective is to develop an integrated, whole-farm cropping system that is both ecologically and economically sustainable. The focus lies on optimizing crop rotations, enhancing nitrogen use efficiency, and reducing the reliance on chemical plant protection products. This is based on a detailed analysis of local conditions, crop physiology, and farm infrastructure. Farm-wide nitrogen management is implemented using digital tools such as the N-Management Tool and N-Expert, supported by Nmin sampling, split fertilizer applications, and the use of cover crops. In plant protection, innovative approaches are applied, including spot and band spraying techniques, image-guided hoeing systems, and biological or biotechnical methods (e.g., beneficial insects, pheromone traps, and crop protection nets). Decision support models (e.g. ISIP, IPM Decisions), weather-based applications, and the H2OT Spot Manager NRW support targeted application and environmental risk assessment. Measures are selected according to farm-specific, crop-specific, and site-specific conditions, tested under practical conditions, and adapted as needed. Conflicts between yield safety, environmental regulations, and market demands are addressed through technical innovation and agronomic expertise. The Chamber of Agriculture of North Rhine-Westphalia provides technical support and advisory services to participating farms and coordinates knowledge transfer by providing farm seminars, field days, and digital formats. The results should be transferable nationwide and contribute to the further development of integrated crop production.
