Developing prospects for productive and diverse crop production is one of the key objectives of the Farming Strategy 2035. The RnAPhidS project addresses this issue by focusing on the application of new, more selective RNA interference (RNAi)-based crop protection agents with a sequence-based mode of action. RNAi agents are considered innovative, GMO-free, environmentally friendly and, above all, highly specific. The project targets two economically important insect pests, the green peach aphid and the cabbage stem flea beetle. The project aims to optimize double-stranded (ds) RNAs as an alternative to conventional insecticides for field application against these insects. This will be achieved in part through a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of uptake and transport in plants. The project also aims to develop formulations to increase the stability of double-stranded RNA as an active ingredient. Processes will be developed for both spray application and electrospinning application.
