The development of prospects for a productive and diverse crop production is one of the key objectives of the Farming Strategy 2035. The RnAPhidS project addresses this by focussing on the application of new, more selective RNA interference (RNAi)-based crop protection agents with a sequence-based mode of action. RNAi agents are considered innovative, GMO-free, environmentally friendly and, above all, highly specific. The project addresses two economically important insect pests, the green peach aphid and the Cabbage stem flea beetle. The project aims to optimise double-stranded (ds) RNAs as an alternative active ingredient to conventional insecticides for field application against these insects. This is to be achieved, among other things, through a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of uptake and transport in plants. The project also aims to develop formulations to increase the stability of double-stranded RNA as an active ingredient. Processes are being developed with the aim of spray application as well as application by means of electrospinning.
