Proteases have important functions in all living cells and control the interactions between pathogen and host. The project focuses on epidemiologically important infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, pathogens which are on the WHO global priority list of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. An interdisciplinary team will combine complementary expertise to better understand the mechanisms by which proteases impact on cellular and functional networks to modulate disease progression. The results will provide fundamental knowledge related to roles of proteases in infection and will inform the design of innovative drugs and vaccines. The project aims at clarifying the role of proteases in infection.
