The goal of the project is to develop resilient apple-growing systems in Bavaria using model orchards at three selected Bavarian research sites, by combining robust genetics—in terms of both varieties and rootstock selection—with the implementation of more extensive training systems. The extensive training system in question is the “Tri-Tree.” In this tree, three leader branches of equal thickness are trained upward in a slender training system to form a slender fruit wall. The slender training system is intended to significantly reduce cultivation efforts, for example, through mechanized pruning. Fruit quality is enhanced by optimal sunlight exposure, and the fall harvest could also be made easier, as the fruit is harvested from a narrow fruit wall.
