Purpose of research: Applied research

VitiSmart is 3 years project with interdisciplinary research activities, structured with a well-balanced division between research and innovation, basic and applied research, field data collection and demonstration, socioeconomic, technology transfer and dissemination actions, as well as management. The project aims to produce, at the end of the project, a resilient viticultural system able to speedily recover from climatic shocks and biological stress (pathogens). This will be allowed by combining resilient cultivars with beneficial microorganisms to acquire a natural-cross-tolerance while maintaining yield.

In collaboration with project partners, the beneficial use of microorganisms to improve the plant resistance are examined. In particular heat stress will be examined as an example of abiotic stress. With regard to biotic stress, on the one hand breeding material will be screened for powdery and downy mildew resistance. On the other hand berry bloom, being one of the parameters of Botrytis resistance, will be evaluated.
