Project code: JKI-PB-08-1239
Contract period: 01.01.2017 - 31.12.2019
Purpose of research: Applied research

Sainfoin is associated with a variety of positive traits, but has been forgotten in middle Europe. The aim of this project is to restrengthen the focus on sainfoin in agriculture. Increasing agricultural biodiversity by implementing sainfoin into crop rotation is the main focus of this project. Both options, sainfoin as intermediate crop and for improving marginal grassland by mixed cultivation with grass, will be considered. In addition to biomass production, it is expected that sainfoin will have positive effects in biogas plants. The use of sainfoin as a substitution of maize will be evaluated; agronomic aspects with respect to barren soil and unfavorable climatic conditions are of special interest. This agronomic evaluation includes the total value chain from biomass to biogas production. Of special interest is the influence of tannins on foam formation in biogas plants. In addition the evaluation of sainfoin from different origins provides material for a future breeding program.
