Project code: JKI-OW-08-1199
Contract period: 01.01.2016 - 31.12.2018
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

a) Monitoring activities as a base for risk analysis regarding Flavescence dorée und its vector Scaphoidus titanus: Germany is so far free of Flavescence dorée and its vector S. titanus, although the vector is continuously extending its range and it is not unlikely that it will establish itself in the region. In order to assess the risks associated with this spread with regard to outbreaks of FD it is necessary to gather information about presence and abundance of potential phytoplasma reservoirs that might serve as potential sources of infection of the FD vector. Therefore, we plan to check symptomatic grapevines as well as potential alternative plant hosts of 16SrV phytoplasmas (Alder, Clematis, Rubus, Rosa) for infection with these pathogens. The leafhoppers located on infected plant species will be identified and also tested for phytoplasma infection. We expect information about the incidence and local occurrence of grapevines infected by 16SrV-Phytoplasmas and potential sources of the inoculum that will be used to setup a management approach with regard to the occurrence of the FD vector S. titanus in the region. The work will be carried out in the frame of an INTERREG-project in cooperation with IFV Colmar and FREDON Alsace.

b) Development of a prognosis system for D. suzukii damage based on the condition of the berry skin: A decision support system for D. suzukii is required with respect to the decision on control measures and their appropriate timing. During the ripening of grape-berries the skin will be ckecked for micro-injuries by fluorescence microscopy. Based on data on the correlation of the condition of the berries and its colonization by D. suzukii a warning system will be developed enabling extension services to provide recommendation on control measures based on the regional situation and specific susceptibility of cultivars.

c) The significance of mealybugs as vectors of grapevine leafroll in northern vine growing areas is increasing. An information network is established within the INTERREG frame based on regular meetings to exchange new information, methodology and samples.
