Assessment of a putative risk for transgene flow in apple
Project
Project code: BAZ-IOZ-02-4115
Contract period: 01.01.2005
- 31.12.2006
Purpose of research: Basic research
The project is aimed on the spread of apple pollen and seeds under natural conditions to assess the putative risk of gene flow in genetically engineered organisms considering apple as example. The dissemination of apple pollen will be investigated in an apple orchard and the dissemination of seeds will be studied under different natural habitats. Beside this, investigations on fertilization will be carried out using transgenic pollen in greenhouse, and the risk of apple DNA contamination in honey will be investigated. The project is relevant to evaluate the effect of transgenic trees on the ecosystem. This research is part of a research programme on risk assessment, taking the characteristics of woody plants into account.
