Investigation of thrips resistance in Chrysanthemum and implementation of results for development of thripsresistant genotypes. Subproject 1 (CHRYRES)
Project
Project code: 2818204215
Contract period: 01.10.2016
- 30.09.2019
Budget: 208,978 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
In cooperation with the plant breeder Brandkamp, the resistance potential of Chrysanthemums to the Western Flower Thrips was investigated and methods for assessing thrips resistance in new cultivars were developed. On the basis of an extensive screening, varieties were selectively crossed with each other. A newly developed bioassay allowed rapid resistance evaluation based on feeding activity or movement pattern of thrips on the leaf. However, when selecting leaves for the bioassay, it is important to consider leaf age. In contrast, the number of trichomes, the hardness or the total phenolic content of the leaves played only a minor role in the resistance assessment. By means of HPLC and discriminant analysis, a set of phenolic compounds could be identified that contributes significantly to resistance and is thus available as a biochemical resistance marker. Furthermore, it has been shown that resistance induction by fungal endophytes is possible. However, further studies are necessary to confirm the fungal effects.
