Evaluation of genetic resources in genus Pelargonium
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-1175
Contract period: 01.08.2005
- 31.08.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research
The genus Pelargonium comprises more than 250 wild species within 16 sections, representing a potential source for broadening the genetic diversity in cultivated geraniums. Therefore, a complex of methods for the use of genetic resources will be established. The first aim of the project using cytological analyses should show which wild species contributed to the cultivated geraniums.- The second part of the project contains investigations of breeding system to explore and overcome interspecific incongruity. Molecular and cytological methods will be developed to identify genomic components of parental species in new hybrids. Development of genetic marker useful for selection is another aim. Geraniums are a potential source of interesting, biologically-active compounds. In the third project part, the spectrum of the flavonoids as important pharmaceutic substances will be determined. The results of the project will be useful for the evaluation of genetic resources in geraniums and for enhancement of genetic diversity.
