Production processes

Project code: JKI-AT-08-1138
Contract period: 01.08.2016 - 30.06.2019
Purpose of research: Applied research

Biocidal products are used for controlling pests such as insects, mice, rats, algae, fungi, bacteria, etc. in various application areas. During the application they can have an effect on non-target organisms and on the environment. Knowledge of ways of application and the impact on non-target organisms and a possible entry into adjacent environmental compartments are necessary. The project is initially intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the areas of application and the related application practices in which biocidal products are applied by spraying, fogging or similar application forms. Applications in which direct discharge into adjacent environmental compartments is to be expected e.g. by drift should be considered and evaluated in detail. For this purpose, existing data for comparable application patterns from plant protection products can be used. In the case of unavailable data, experimental investigations should be carried out in order to derive relevant parameters for the environmental exposure.

As area of application with high environmental exposure to drift, the control of the oak processionary moth (OPM) has been rated as significant. The aim of the work was to investigate the drift caused during application with a helicopter under field conditions at an avenue. A comparison with the results of a cannon sprayer from the last year shows that there was less drift when using a helicopter than when using a cannon sprayer. In addition, a lower drift was detected with ID-120-05 POM nozzles than with the standard Airmix 11 0-05 nozzles.
