Project code: JKI-PB-08-1224
Contract period: 01.03.2015 - 31.10.2017
Purpose of research: Applied research

Among other extreme weather events, especially drought is one of the major causes for yield losses in Germany. The natural conditions will change considerably for the German agriculture in the coming decades, and the water is the main limiting factor for biomass production. In particular, increasing spring (2011) and summer drought (2003) have a negative impact on agricultural production, especially in the regions of the Northeast German lowlands, in the central parts of eastern Germany, in the south-eastern German Basin and the Upper Rhine valley. To develop appropriate management strategies and adaptations, systematic monitoring of the development state of agricultural crops during the growing season at the local level is required. In particular, the early detection of drought stress is becoming more important. At an early stage of drought irrigation can stabilize yields. But the problem is not only the reduced water supply, but the limited availability of water dissolved nutrients for the plants. Under these conditions, the plants die by nutrient rather than lack of water. In addition to economic risks arising from reduced crop yields, there is a considerable ecological risk through the unused nutrients that can be leached into groundwater later. The project focuses on the combined use of EnMAP, RapidEye and SENTINEL-2 data and the associated improved spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution of the information that can be used as part of a future regional monitoring and early warning system for drought stress in agricultural areas.
