Phenotypic and molecular characterization of material originating from a collecting mission in China consisting of five Malus species as basis for core collections
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-0056
Contract period: 01.08.2011
- 30.06.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research
The collection of genetic resources of Malus provides an important tool to the breeder. The use of this tool depends on the characterization of the genetic resources. This project is aimed at the phenotypic and molecular evaluation of accessions of five Malus species originating from China. The material was collected in China during a collection mission. Based on the phenotypic and molecular data the aim is to establish core collections for each species and to transfer the selected accessions to the permanent Malus collection in the gene bank of the JKI in Dresden-Pillnitz. A set of SSR markers, designed by the ECPGR (European Cooperative Program for Plant Genetic resources) working group Malus/Pyrus, will be applied for the genetic characterization. Thereby a genetic fingerprint distinct for each accession will be determined. This fingerprint can be used to compare data available in Europe and to get more information about the pedigree of Malus.
