Project code: JKI-SF-08-1234
Contract period: 01.07.2014 - 31.12.2019
Purpose of research: Applied research

The assessment of resource use efficiency, carbon footprint and water footprint constitutes an important addition to the existing findings from the agronomic, pest and plant protection related as well as economic assessments of the long-term field experiments in Dahnsdorf. Globally limited resources as well as potentially negative environmental impacts of suboptimal resource use efficiency in crop production call for a stringent and holistic assessment of resource use efficiency in crop production. Additionally, agricultural production, which is globally one of the most important contributors to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, inevitably contributes to global climate change. Increasing frequency and intensity of dry periods even in Germany, as well as the potential pollution of surface and ground water resources by agricultural production make the water footprint an increasingly important sustainability indicator for cropping systems. The simultaneous assessment of resource use efficiency, carbon footprint and water footprint and of potential trade-offs between the single indicators constitutes an important basis for the sustainability evaluation of alternative cropping systems. This evaluation may be applied to the long-term experiments in Dahnsdorf as well as on farm survey data.
