Collaborative project: Improving resistance in maize against Fusarium ear rot – relevant fungal species, mycotoxins and the response of maize genotypes. Subproject 2 (EarRot)
Project
Project code: 2818208415
Contract period: 01.03.2017
- 29.02.2020
Budget: 427,666 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
In the EarRot project we investigated the occurrence of Fusarium spp. on maize in Germany during 2017 and 2018. The dominant species on cobs were Fusarium graminearum, F. verticillioides and F. temperatum, while F. graminearum, F. equiseti and F. temperatum were prevailing on stalks. Temperature and precipitation in July and September, had the strongest impact on ear and stalk infections, respectively. Ploughing significantly reduced the infection with F. graminearum and F. temperatum. Maize hybrids were artificially inoculated in order to test their resistance and compare the aggressiveness of four Fusarium species. F. temperatum was the most aggressive species and chemical analysis confirmed an increased risk for contamination with the mycotoxin beauvericin. Furthermore, trichothecene chemotypes were identified in F. graminearum, F. culmorum, and F. crookwellense, by using melting curve analysis. Isolates were assigned to the 15-ADON (91%), 3ADON (4%) and NIV chemotype (5%).
