Nigella (also. black-caraway, black cumin, Nigella sativa L.) contains numerous phytochemicals including terpenoids, saponins, flavonoids, and alkaloids. Interesting pharmacological and nutraceutical properties has led to increasing demand for nigella seed in food and pharmaceutical industries. Development of new genetically uniform genotypes with high yield and high content of desired active substances and durability is necessary. As a basis for nigella breeding, information on agro-morphological and phytochemical characters of available germplasm should be provided. The lack of nigella genomic information is an obstacle in development of molecular markers, novel gene discovery and molecular breeding. The present study will be conducted to characterize the variation of agro-morphological traits, oil content and composition of nigella germplasm collections from Iran and the federal ex-situ collection of agricultural and horticultural plants of the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research at Gatersleben (IPK), Germany, in different ecological conditions. Beside, SSR markers will be developed from transcriptome sequencing data of nigella, using next generation sequencing technology, and will be used for molecular genetic diversity analysis of nigella accessions. Information on range of variation and quantitative genetics of the important traits and molecular relationships between the accessions will be provided.
