Smart breeding solutions to minimize ergot incidence in hybrid rye (PREMIUM)

Project

Project code: JKI-ZL-08-3215
Contract period: 01.04.2017 - 30.03.2022
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: plant breeding, plant genetic resources, rye, ergot

Plant genetic resources (PGR) for food and agriculture are the raw material indispensable for crop genetic improvement. However, introgression of desired genes into adapted breeding material is often hampered by genes, which have a negative impact on crop performance. This problem of a common inheritance of desirable and undesirable genes in backcross breeding is known as a so-called 'linkage drag'. PREMIUM aims to evaluate various breeding options for the simultanous optimization of performance and pollen shedding in hybrid rye. PREMIUM is an innovative contribution to the use of biodiversity present in genetic resources of rye. By developing genetic approaches that enable the production of hybrid rye largely free from ergot, PREMIUM serve the purpose of preventive health protection which at the same time constitutes preventive consumer protection. PREMIUM promotes the competitiveness of rye in modern agricultural production systems and contributes to the preservation of crop species diversity in agroecosystems.
