Collaborative project: Development of non-chemical seed treatments for control of seed- and soilborne pathogens of maize - Subproject 1 (SaatMaisPlus)

Project

Project code: 2814902315, JKI-BI-08-1246
Contract period: 01.05.2017 - 30.09.2020
Budget: 228,257 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Sustainable plant protection

Aim of the project SaatMaisPlus was the development of non-chemical seed treatment methods to control seed- and soil-borne diseases in maize (Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium). In order to achieve this goal, a combined approach of physical methods (electron treatment) and the application of microbial antagonists was carried out. Firstly the method of electron treatment was optimized for maize seeds, secondly more than 200 bacterial and fungal isolates were extracted from the rhizosphere of maize seedlings. Their disease suppressive efficiency was determined in vitro and in vivo. In climate chamber trials several isolates with disease suppressive action compared to tlahe chemical standard were determined. Unfortunately, during the duration of the project SaatMaisPlus it was not possible to confirm the results in open-field trials. However, the weather conditions during the period of the field trials were extremely harsh (cold and dry). In experiments related to the combination of both methods and regarding the shelf life of the antagonists led to promising results for practical utilization. In addition, the identified microorganisms and the developed biotests can be used for ongoing studies.
