Purpose of research: Demonstration
The subproject aims to assess the use of exclusion netting for fruit crops to prevent or reduce infestations due to the Spotted Wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, economically. The expensive exclusion netting contributes to the reduction of the use of insecticides against this pest. Therefore, the project conforms to main objectives of the German National Action Plan on Sustainable use of Plant Protection Products, adopted by the German government on April the 10th, 2013 pursuant to § 4 of the Plant Protection Act. By the development, investigation and testing of new nonchemical measures in integrated plant protection this project contributes to the achievement of the NAPs objectives. The NAP, in addition targets at the introduction of new technologies into agricultural practice. A profound analysis of the economic implications of new and innovative plant protection techniques on demonstration farms provides important information for a successful implementation into agricultural practice. The subproject analysis the economic feasibility of already installed nets against the Spotted Wing Drosophila, especially in cherry, raspberry, blackberry and remontant strawberry. Therefore, parameters on investment and maintenance costs, labour input, crop yield and crop quality are to be assessed by interviews and investigations and then economically evaluated.
