Investigation of various influencing factors on heterologous fusion during interspecific hybridisation within genus Pelargonium
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-0053
Contract period: 01.04.2011
- 31.03.2019
Purpose of research: Applied research
The genetic diversity of the current range of Pelargonium is very limited. This is due to incompatibility existing already for interspecific crossings as high barriers. But it is desirable better to use the rich genetic pool of Pelargonium. So, important characters such as disease resistance and decorative traits (flower form and color, shape, etc.) could be employed for the extension of the varieties. The planned research project on somatic hybridisation with Pelargonium represents a real alternative to sexual crossings. New knowledge about the genus Pelargonium with more than 250 species will be elaborated. The research project bases on existing expertise. This is indispensable, as the development from the cell to regenerated plant with at least one year is slow. By that fact an optimisation of the experiments will be significantly influenced. In previous work the regenerated plants were only homokaryons. After a successful protocol for regeneration was developed, the focus is now on a possible influence on the fusion of both partners. In addition to the creation of new genetic diversity different findings on biotechnological usability of Pelargonium genotypes could be expected. Methods in vitro play an increasing role when it comes to the maintenance and reproduction of valuable and partly rare plant genotypes.
