Project code: 28RZ3055
Contract period: 01.04.2017 - 31.03.2020
Budget: 70,532 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The project aims to develop and establish an innovative concept for the boar semen preservation minimizing the use of antibiotics and reducing the risk of resistant bacterial strains. This interactive approach combining science, pig artificial insemination (AI) centers and industry offers optimal conditions for the development of a novel, scientifically proven and use-orientated concept for low-temperature boar semen preservation. The preservation strategy will be tested for feasibility in terms of sperm quality and bacterial contamination by using a prototype 5°C semen extender. Work Packages (WP): WP1: Temperature management and antibiotic-free 5°C semen extender (spermatology and microbiology): To develop and establish a chilling concept for the 5°C preservation of boar semen by using the antibiotic-free prototype semen extender in comparison with the standard 17°C semen extender with antibiotics; determining the degree and type of bacterial contamination in extended semen samples and the survival of specific bacteria in the dilution media. WP2: Alternative antimicrobial components as addition to the 5°C semen extender: Depending on results of WP1 different antimicrobial active substances will be tested for their influence on sperm quality and bacterial contamination of extended semen samples. WP3: Practical application: Whole chain approach for the implementation of low-temperature semen preservation into pig AI centers covering all aspects of production, processing, logistic and quality control. The feasibility of the preservation technique will be tested in AI field trials. WP4: Dissemination and utilization of results: Process improvement and strategic assessment for presentation and publication of results, production steps and marketing as well as the practical application in AI centers.
