In Germany Meloidogyne chitwoodi was first detected around 20 years ago. So far, only few incidents were reported but the nematode is spreading. Given the fact that M. chitwoodi is established in the Netherlands and cross-border use of machinery for potato growing is common, continuous spread of the nematode on the German site is expected. The negative impact on potato production will be further aggravated by the lack of resistances in the actual cultivar collection. Hence, the identification of resistances against M. chitwoodi in wild species and their introgression into breeding material is of highest importance. For a sustainable resistance management it is also essential that complementing resistances are combined with one another (pyramiding), so that a selection of resistance breaking isolates is prevented. Of particular importance is an anticipatory strategy due to crossing and selection cycles of about ten years. This is particularly true when new sources of resistance are introduced from wild species. Resistance genes from wild species are often linked to negative alleles (linkage drag) being the cause of low yield. This necessitates breeding cycles towards the removal of the negative alleles. Instrumental in streamlining these otherwise time consuming processes are high-throughput protocols for a marker-assisted selection.

In parts of Europe the nematode Meloidogyne chitwoodi is wide spread and is a serious problem in potato growing regions. The negative impact on potato production is further aggravated by the lack of resistances in released cultivars. Hence, the identification of resistance against M. chitwoodi in wild species and their introgression into breeding material is of high importance. The resistance gene RMC1 was mapped in a BC6 population on chromosome 11 and by comparing the homology at the sequence level (BLAST) it was possible to shorten the target interval.
