Wood construction under the influence of the climatic change - development of strategies to ensure the serviceability

Project

Project code: 28WC307101
Contract period: 01.06.2017 - 30.06.2018
Budget: 170,352 Euro
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Keywords: timber work, forecast, climate (climate relevance, climate protection, climate change)

The project aims at using the existing knowledge on climatic change and wood constructions to create a deterministic (mechanistic) model for analyzing and quantifying the consequences of the climatic change in the performance of future wood constructions, especially in the critical parts of the structures (e.g. joints, interfaces, etc.). The objective is to improve wood constructions in views of the future changes, such that the future market share of wood can be improved. This will in turn mitigate the negative effects of the climatic change by ensuring CO2 storage and reduction of energy consumption in the construction industry. The objective of this project is to be achieved by three working packages (WPs). Two milestones are expected after the culmination of the first two WPs. The objective of WP1 is the determination of the boundary conditions and input data to be used for the creation of the models. These data will be obtained by a comprehensive literature review, evaluation of climatic models and research of structural damages in wood constructions. The WP will culminate delivering the Milestone 1 which entails the selection of the set of data (geometries, climatic data, materials, damages) to be implemented in the determinstic models. The WP2 deals with the creation, calibration and validation of the numerical models. Most of the data used to calibrate and validate the models will be obtained from already in-house climatic testing data of the Fraunhofer WKI. The Milestone 2 is deemed to be achieved after successfully validating the deterministic models against experimental results, and conducting the corresponding simulations under relevant climatic variations. The WP3 deals with the sensitivity analysis and parametric study of the models, specially in the critical parts of the structures, which will allow for screening the expected influence of the climatic changes in wood constructions, and finally set up an strategy for the the future constructions.
