Purpose of research: Applied research

Potential synergistic and antagonistic toxicity mechanisms of mixtures of nanoparticles and soluble chemicals are investigated in different liver cell lines and primary hepatocytes. As reference substances, cerium dioxide nanoparticles and paracetamol are applied to different hepatic cell models alone and in mixtures. Viability and genotoxicity studies will be conducted together with metabolomic studies applying cutting-edge “omics” and imaging mass spectrometric methodology. Cell cultures where toxicological reactions or metabolomics changes were observed will be subjected to a detailed investigation of particle distribution and biokinetics by imaging mass spectrometry. The work should answer the question if and by which mechanisms, the toxicity of soluble chemicals is affected by nanoparticles. Generated data will be used for the further development of nanomaterial risk assessment and regulation.
