Purpose of research: Applied research

In the last year, malting barley showed a clear tendeny to decreasing protein concentrations. In the last three years, high grain yields resulted regionally in protein concentrations lower than 9.5 % which is a technological limit value for the production of beer from malt. Therefor, there is a high interest along all links of the econimic value added chain from barley breeders along farmer and maltsers to brewers to produce malting barley with optimum protein concentrations. By a coordinated serie of field experiments with different varieties and fertilization regimes in differents German regions reliable information shall be gained about the question how to produce confidently and reguarly malting barley protein concentrations within the range of 9.5 to 11.5 %.
