Collaborative project: Management of resistant Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus): Monitoring and strategy development into the prevention of rodent-associated diseases - subproject 1 (ResRaMa)

Project

Project code: 281B102016, JKI-GF-08-1214
Contract period: 15.07.2018 - 14.06.2022
Budget: 344,644 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: climate change

For Europe an increase of rodent-associated diseases is assumed because of changes of the climate. Climate change can lead to an increase of rat populations. The infection risk can thereby increase for persons and animals because Norway rats are valid as potential reservoir and carrier of numerous human- and animal-pathogenic. Besides data of human- and animal-pathogenic in Norway rats, concrete prevention and management proposals for farmers are missed. They are necessary, because Norway rats have developed genetically based resistance to current rodenticides and the application of the effective ones are restricted by risk mitigation measures. In the project a strategy shall be developed by collecting monitoring data to resistance, migration, pathogenic and rodenticide residues in combination with different management measures. Strategy application shall cover beside protecting livestock the currently absent plant protection for rat infestations. In face of the infection risk expected by Norway rats in livestock farming the following concrete working aims are pursued in the project: i) Monitoring of a) rodenticide resistance and migration patterns of Norway rats, b) rodenticide residues and c) human- and animal-pathogenic in Norway rats. ii) Strategy development for management with prevention by a) applications of measures and combinations, b) strategy development based on i) and iia) and c) strategy optimization and-validation. Strategy and scientific results are published national and international by presentations and papers.
