Food and consumer protection

Project code: BfR-EXPO-08-13xx-xxx
Contract period: 01.01.2019 - 31.12.2019
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Keywords: exposure assessment, marketing

For dietary exposure assessments the BfR can rely on comprehensive food consumption data. However, two main problems arise due to the application of these data: (1) data were collected several years ago (e.g. data collection for NVS II was in 2005/2006). New consumption trends or foods which are new on the market are not captured by these data; (2) the level of detail of these data is not sufficient to answer specific questions about food consumption (e.g. distinguishing between fresh fruits and pre-cut fruits in the super market). This results in a situation where specific question cannot be answered or just with a high degree of uncertainty. In this context market share data from consumer panels can provide important and up-to-date indications for consumer behavior. By means of a framework contract for supply of existing market share data, the long process of individual tenders can be omitted. By this, marked share data can be retrieved for specific purposes and also for short-term requests. Further, the retrieved data will be incorporated in the existing BfR data pool. These data can be applied to upcoming requests or research questions and can also be provided to other departments from the BMEL. In this way the BfR extents its data pool whereby more robust exposure assessments are possible and also short-term requests can be answered.
