Collaborative Project BioTip (2): Understanding and Managing Desertification Tipping Points – A Namibian Perspective. Subproject 5: Social-ecological processes and farmers‘ knowledge (NamTip)

Project

Project code: 01LC1821E
Contract period: 01.03.2019 - 28.02.2021
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Drylands; savannas; desertification; tipping points; Namibia; social-ecological systems; pastoralism; rangeland ecology

In the NamTip project, scientists and stakeholders collaborate closely to gain a better understanding of the most important tipping point for dryland ecosystems worldwide, i.e. the tipping point at the threshold to desertification. It will generate the necessary scientific foundation to understand the development of desertification tipping points; make use of those findings to develop suitable early warning systems; explore desertification impacts on local people’s livelihood; and finally transfer and implement the scientific findings into management interventions in order to prevent the desertification tipping point.
