Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-293
Contract period: 01.01.2007 - 31.12.2007
Purpose of research: Basic research

The use of waterpipes increased recently among the youth in Germany. The knowledge about health hazards is very limited. Beside the metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocar-bons the tobacco-specific nitrosamines as well as acrylamide and Acrolein play an important role in the toxicology of cigarette smoke. Nothing is known about these compounds in the smoke of waterpipes. The urine of waterpipe smokers and non-smokers will be analyzed for the corresponding metabolites. It is expected, that the results will yield sufficient information on the health hazards of waterpipe smokers.
