Provision of poison centres data to verify exposure modellings
Project
Project code: BfR-EXPO-08-13xx-xxx
Contract period: 01.01.2019
- 31.12.2019
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
In the Substance Evaluation under REACH, a number of solvents have been assessed by Germany. The evaluation of further solvents is planned for the near future. Typical applications are adhesives, paints and varnishes. In addition, these substances are registered under REACH for a wide range of consumer uses. Exposure estimates for applications with high quantities related to large surfaces lead to critical values. Many solvents are neurotoxic. The modelling of the exposure contains uncertainties and should be verified by poisoning notifications in terms of activities such as brushing, carpet gluing, etc. Here, poison centres can provide valuable information on the circumstances of real incidents that allow a comparison to the modelled exposure. In various projects with the participation of the BfR, the use of the data for exposure assessment has already been analysed. By recording data of the effected person, the product, the agent, the severity of the poisoning, and the circumstances of exposure, it is possible to identify exposure situations. The aim of the project is the provision of poison centres notifications by one or more poison centres with regard to product groups such as paints, varnishes, thinners, stripping agents, adhesives, building foams which have led to health effects during their use in foreseeable and realistic manner.
