Collaborative project: Development of automated techniques for early field diagnosis of downy mildew, Plasmopara viticola, for adapted plant protection in organic viticulture (AuDiSense)

Project

Project code: 2815NA173
Contract period: 09.11.2018 - 31.10.2021
Budget: 141,088 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: crop protection, plant health, viticulture (winery), sustainability, organic farming

In AuDiSens a sensor-based early-diagnosis system of downy mildew of grapevine, Plasmopara viticola, shall be developed in order to reduce application of plant protection products. Both fungus resistant and traditional cultivars will be included in the studies. As a future prospect, results are thought to serve as a basis for local-scale plant protection system, with reference to the prognosis system, VitiMeteo. Implementation of the diagnosis follows a three-step-procedure, from the laboratory to the greenhouse and, eventually, vineyard. A pilot study under field conditions will be applied by using mobile sensors, i.e. sensor system on automated phenotyping platform well as sensors for temperature and air humidity measurements in the field. The data will used to test transferability of the developed prediction model and to compile a concept for applicability and further developments. AuDiSens is subdivided into six working packages, as are AP1) studies on the epidemiology of P. viticola including PIWI- and traditional cultivars (JKI-OWS); AP2) evaluation of sensors (JKI-ZR), AP3) data processing and analysis of sensor based raw data (LemnaTec); AP4) data mining (TU DO); AP5) Pilot-study of field diagnosis (all partners); AP6) Transfer of knowledge into viticulture and research communities. Epidemiological data of AP1 will be used as important ground truth data with regard to the development of algorithms for sensor data analysis (AP2). AP2: different sensor data and corresponding ground truth data (rating of disease symptoms, phenology or qualitative/quantitative analysis of stilbens using UHPLC) will be acquired during the whole infection cycle (usage as training data). AP2 consist a proof-of-principle study in order to verify the precision of early detection of downy mildew under lab conditions. Validation of the results of sensor data analysis (AP 3/AP4) and process optimization. AP5 consists a pilot study with the aim to investigate the precision of disease diagnostic in the field. Field days, workshops and the compilation of a handout, results of AuDiSens will transfer to wine growers, viticulture and public. For JKI-OWS main focus is on AP1, which is subdivided into AP1.1) studies on the epidemiology of P. viticola on the host plant under controlled and natural conditions, and AP1.2) infection events in the field under different copper regimes. Studies will be performed on selected cultivars, both PIWI and traditional, in the laboratory, in the greenhouse and in the field.
