Collaborative projects: Structural genome variation, haplotype diversity and the barley pan-genome - Exploring structural genome diversity for barley breeding. Subproject A: Coordination (SHAPE)

Project

Project code: 031B0190A
Contract period: 01.11.2016 - 31.10.2019
Budget: 2,240,830 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The SHAPE project is an interdisciplinary effort to discover the complexity of structural variation and to estimate the dimension of the core- and pan-genome of barley to establish new approaches underpinning innovative strategies in genomics-based barley breeding and exploration of natural genetic resources for crop improvement. The project will build extensively on previous work of the cooperation partners and extend previously established barley genomic resources to a completely new level and comprehension and thus unlock the complexity of barley genomic diversity and structural variation for innovative and sustainable barley breeding. By the direct interaction with one of the leading barley breeding companies in Germany and Europe we will demonstrate the power and potential of the generated high density and high resolution genomic variation matrix for application in genome wide association (GWAS) mapping and genome-wide prediction approaches in a modern barley breeding program and showcase how this information can be exploited for better informed selection of diverse and compatible haplotypes represented in natural genetic resource collections for predictable increase of genetic diversity and thus enforcing of breeding programs.
