Purpose of research: Applied research

The partners of this collaborative project are two research institutes, a biotechnology company and an associated partner (University). The aim of the project is to develop a market-ready product for use in plant protection based on a strain of the bacterium Lysobacter enzymogenes. The preparation to be developed should have fungicidal and bactericidal activity and a broad field of use. The following topics shall be treated in the project: a. Characterisation of the spectrum of activity. The fungicidal and bactericidal activity will be assessed in laboratory and greenhouse assays b. Mode of action studies. These studies will test whether the induction of plant resistance contributes to the activity, and whether the bacteria are able to live in the plants as endophytes. Another important question in this regard is whether the presence of living cells is a prerequisite for biological activity / promotes biological activity, or whether the latter is largely based on antimicrobial metabolites. c. In this respect, identification of the metabolites involved is imported. It will provide information on the identity of the metabolites, which on the one hand is crucial for registration of the commercial product and on the other will help in the targeted development and use of the product. d. Optimisation of fermentation and formulation. The aim is the development of fermentation methods, formulations and application forms that improve the storage stability and facilitate the use and biological activity of the product. e. The newly developed formulations will be tested in field- and greenhouse tests under close-to-practice conditions in relevant pathosystems.
