Production processes

Project code: JKI-EP-02-2143
Contract period: 01.01.1999 - 31.12.2003
Purpose of research: Applied research

Utilisation of new pathogen resistances enables the decrease of fungicide application in the growing of winter barley in favor of a sustainable and ecologically compatible agriculture. By developing more effective methods (marker-assisted selection), it is possible to accelerate this process. The investigation includes the characterization of crossing populations of barley to develop molecular markers for resistance to fungi. Especially AFLP and SSR as DNA markers will be used for genetic and genome studies to construct genetic linkage maps.

Mapping populations derived from segregating progeny of a cross between resistant wild barley lines and susceptible barley cultivars were produced. By means of molecular techniques (SSR and AFLP-Analysis) genotypes were screened for genes conferring resistance to fungal pathogens. The novel leaf rust resistance gene from the wild type of barley was mapped and markers closely linked to them were found.
