Project code: BAZ-IPA-02-1250, 5401621
Contract period: 01.07.2003 - 30.06.2006
Purpose of research: Basic research

Only few analytical methods can be applied to successfully perform structural investigations of plant materials. Beside IR and NIR spectroscopy, especially Raman spectroscopy is a suitable tool to obtain specific data of plant tissue; this method can be used also on the cellular level. By excitation with the radiation of the Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm fluorescence and photochemical degradation can be effectively eliminated. In principle, ATR-IR and NIR spectroscopy can be also successfully used for rapid and non-destructive determinations of various plant substances. The mentioned vibrational spectroscopy methods are mainly used in quality control as well as breeding research (e.g. prediction of the optimal harvest date, selection of high-quality single-plants during a botanical excursion). The aim of the project is to obtain new spectral information of medicinal & and spice plants as well as dying plants which up to now are not available. In this context also chemotaxonomic questions will be considered. New vibrational spectroscopic methods (NIR, IR, Raman) for rapid and mostly non-destructive determination of selected plant substances have been developed. Applying the micro Raman mapping technique the distribution of specific components in different plant matrices have been detected on the cellular level.
