Selection and breeding of nutrient efficient and late blight resistant potato breeding lines for sustainable organic farming (NePhyKa)

Project

Project code: 2818NA001
Contract period: 01.11.2019 - 31.10.2022
Budget: 250,159 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: abiotic stress, crop production, potato, nutrients, plant nutrition, plant genetic resources, resistance, organic farming

The joint project aims at development of a breeding strategy during breeding-based adaptation of potatoes with increased biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Breeding lines are to be developed that guarantee reliable yield and quality in future organic farming while reducing nutrient supplies and use of pesticides. These will serve as a source for new suitable varieties for organic farming. In the project framework, information is to be obtained on the uptake and utilisation efficiency of potatoes with regard to nitrogen and phosphorus as two essential nutrients. This will be achieved by hydroponic, pot, field and digital phenotyping experiments in a LemnaTec system to record shoot and root growth as well as tuber formation under different nutrient conditions. The project will investigate – also with the help of drone technology – to what extent the nutrient supply of the potato influences the susceptibility to Phytophthora infestans. For the traits of interest DNA-based markers are to be developed. The selection of breeding strains takes place under organic and conventional farming conditions.
