StroPellGas sustainable use of straw pellets for biogas production (StroPellGas)

Project

Project code: 22041518
Contract period: 01.08.2019 - 31.07.2022
Budget: 534,094 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: biogas, digitalization

As a joint project of the HAWK and the University of Göttingen, the "StroPellGas" project is intended to contribute to achieving the objectives of the call for proposals "Strengthening the utilisation of agricultural residues and waste materials for biogas production". In the project different scenarios for the use of straw pellets as biogas substrate are technically, analytically, socio-economically and ecologically considered. This should also include the development and evaluation of concepts for the production and transport of straw pellets. In addition, a life cycle assessment is planned, which includes an assessment of the improvement of the CO2 balance through the substitution of maize silage by straw pellets. The quality and suitability of different straw pellets as biogas substrate will be evaluated by chemical and physical analyses as well as the determination of the gas yield potential. On the basis of the scenarios developed, the effects on the biogas process will be investigated in continuous pilot plant trials. Parameters such as the increase of dry matter, nutrient supply and viscosity are taken into account. The large-scale feasibility of the project is to be investigated and validated by trials on a practical plant. A socio-economic evaluation by means of process cost calculations and an acceptance study will be carried out. By providing a handbook and a calculation tool, plant operators are provided with decision-making aids. Especially for operators of existing plants ways are shown to increase the economic efficiency and sustainability of their plant.
