Collaborative project: Optimizing the forest-factory timber supply chain by analyzing, assessing and refining methods of round timber measurement and supply chain operations in timber sales, subproject 2: Volume and quality-influencing factors in wood pole measurement
Project
Project code: 22017916
Contract period: 01.06.2019
- 31.05.2022
Budget: 310,460 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: forestry, timber quality, timber quantities, timber supply chain, renewable ressources
German forestry and timber operations are increasingly under pressure to establish more efficient operations and structures in the timber supply chain and in timber purchasing. Timber quantities continue to be recounted at different interfaces to control supply chain operations, to bill services and quantities sold, and to establish the chain of custody. Different methods of round timber measurement with different units, e.g. dimension, volume and weight, are used. The emergence of new measurement methods and the capacity to render captured data digitally usable for every stakeholder to optimize the supply chain harbors potentials for boosting efficiency in data acquisition, communication and processing. The frequently compartmentalized structures and complexity of the forestry and timber cluster’s business relationships are hindering advanced technologies and efficient operations from penetrating the market, though. This project is pursuing the overall objective of filling existing gaps in knowledge about sales and purchasing operations as well as the methods of round timber measurement embedded in them.
