Biomethane and peat substitute from poplar wood
Project
Project code: 22038318
Contract period: 01.04.2019
- 31.03.2021
Budget: 268,060 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: peat substitute, renewable ressources, biogas
Poplar wood from short rotation plantations can be used as a renewable raw material for the production of renewable energies, e.g. for decentralized heat contracting. However, the use of climate-friendly wood heating systems in urban areas faces many challenges, such as the space required for heating systems and fuel storage, as well as the current discussion on fine dust. The use of poplar wood for biomethane production via the biogas process within the framework of this project is an innovative approach to the energetic use. The degree of innovation is further increased by the combination with the material use of the wood fibre fraction as a peat substitute after separation of the fermentation residues. The biogas process can be understood as an upstream conditioning step for the material use, which provides energy and exploits (with appropriate substrate conservation) the wood's potential of volatile substances too. The following tasks are addressed in the project: (1) Parameter identification (fibre length, fibre distribution) for a double-function disintegration treatment of poplar wood for biogas and peat substitute production, (2) Development of a process for the continuous, stable, and high-yield fermentation of poplar wood fibres to biogas (biomethane) on a laboratory scale, (3) Development and testing of crop cultivation utilisation concepts for the solid wood-fibrous fraction of the fermentation residues (tests as peat substitute) on a practical scale as well as theoretical considerations on the utilisation options of the liquid phase of the digestate, (4) economic and ecological evaluation of the overall concept (estimation).
