Collaborative project: Use of Big Data in Wheat for Precision Breeding - subproject 4 (BigData)

Project

Project code: 2818408D18
Contract period: 01.02.2020 - 31.01.2023
Budget: 37,186 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: modeling, plant breeding, digital world, data management, crop production, seed and planting material, wheat, climate (climate relevance, climate protection, climate change)

Extensive phenotypic and genomic data (Big Data) are an important prerequisite for the knowledge-based breeding of resilient wheat varieties. The main objective of the research project is to exploit the potential of Big Data for the breeding of efficient varieties to face the challenges of the climate change. In a large number of research and breeding projects, valuable data from wheat populations of several hundred to a few thousand genotypes (small data) have been collected, which contribute to various aspects of breeding efficient and resistant varieties. In order to reach the level of Big Data, these different, project-specific data sets must be integrated. This requires two steps: First, the data must be subjected to quality analysis, harmonization and curation. In a second step, substantial innovations are required in the biometric analysis of heterogeneous phenotypic and genomic data and in genome-wide prediction and mapping techniques. The project combines partners from science and industry with worldwide unique know-how in breeding informatics and wheat breeding.
