Project code: BfR-PRS-08-1322-353
Contract period: 01.04.2008 - 31.12.2008
Purpose of research: Applied research

Recently, Stiftung Warentest detected high amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in consumer products like hammer grips. As yet no systematic studies have been performed on the issue of how much of the PAH content present in consumer products may leave the material and migrate off at regular handling conditions. There is also no estab-lished and accepted experimental model to address this issue in a reproducible manner. In the present project we want to establish two independent analytical methods to determine the PAH content of certain consumer products and the fraction of PAHs that leach out of the material during usage at regular conditions. To this end, we will analyze all PAHs proposed by the EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency)and EFSA (European Food Safety Agency). The experiments will be performed with both consumer products supposed to be in contact with skin and toys for children that possibly are also in contact with pharyngeal mucosa. We are aimed to investigate a possible correlation between the total content of PAHs in the product and the leachable (migrating) fraction of the product under normal using conditions. The total amount of PAHs in the products will be analyzed after exhaustive extraction under heating and supersonic conditions, whereas the amount of migrating PAHs will be determined under simulated using conditions (e.g. incubation with sweat or a sweat surrogate for the duration of the normal use of the product).
