The aim of the project Mak-Pak Scale-Up is to optimize the production process for the industrial implementation of an innovative and sustainable, bio-degradable and preferably edible macroalgae-based packaging material for the food industry. The previous "Mak-Pak project (funding period 03/2018 to 02/2020) supported by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture led to the successful development of a functional macroalgae-based packaging prototype, including production of the raw macroalgae biomass in aquaculture at laboratory and small pilot scales. To make the packaging prototype ready for the market and to improve its economic viability, the raw material for the packaging will be expanded to include sustainable and bio-based materials from agricultural and food industry sectors. The constant supply of reliable, highquality raw materials with consistent quality is extremely important for packaging in the food sector. Therefore, the optimization of controlled macroalgae aquaculture under industry-related pilot conditions at a large scale will be a mainstay of the Mak-Pak Scale-Up project. Through these strategies, the packaging concept will be optimized in a sustainable and targeted manner to achieve a quick market launch.
