Purpose of research: Experimental development

Wild plants of desert areas show regularly higher heavy metal concentrations because of extreme growth conditions. Plants show reduced biomass growth due to drought/salt stress, a narrower leaf:stem ratio and lower leaf water content which results in an enrichment of heavy metals. These wild plants are adapted to stress conditions which make them promising candidates for the re-vegetation of reclaimed soils after de-urbanization. It is the aim of the research project to demonstrate that the seeds of these native plants grown under controlled conditions have a higher productivity, a wider leaf:stem ratio, a higher leaf water content, and most important a significantly reduced heavy metal content. The successful establishment of wild plants on re-cultivated soils will be relevant for landscape planning and allocation of natural medicine. The project is a contribution to save natural habitats, to re-establish agricultural production on currently sealed soils and to produce a product quality of medicinal plants that satisfies worldwide standards.
