Project code: JKI-BI-08-1279
Contract period: 01.10.2020 - 30.04.2021
Purpose of research: Applied research

In 2018/2019, a mass increase in the gypsy moth population in 'Franken' occurred leading to a joint research project of the Technical University of Munich, the University of Würzburg and the 'Bayerische Landesanstalt für Wald und Forstwirtschaft' to investigate the populations increase and decrease causes and effects. In this context, areas with high and low density populations were monitored and used for the collection of gypsy moth larvae in February 2019. In 2020, the gypsy moth population largely collapsed. Parasitoids and the baculovirus LdMNPV are discussed to cause this decline. To check the infection of the larvae with LdMNPV and to gain knowledge of the genetic diversity and population genetics of LdMNPV, methods for identifying LdMNPV genotypes needs to be developed and validated, which is intended to be done at the Julius Kühn-Institut, Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants, Institute for Biological Control in Darmstadt (ME). With this new method at hand, around 100 samples of gypsy moth are planned to be examined.
