Development of coloured carrots for organic production
Project
Project code: JKI-ZG-08-1125
Contract period: 01.04.2011
- 30.10.2014
Purpose of research: Applied research
In the context of a DFG project an extensive gene bank collection of carrot was evaluated for health promoting ingredients. As a result a number of high interesting phenotypes could be selected with potential for the development of new carrot op-varieties. The aim of the project is to initiate an organic breeding approach of new carrot cultivars with focus on the niche market: colour and shape variation. The breeding project will be carried out as a co-operation in the Julius Kühn-Institute (JKI) and the satimex company and enclose further crossing experiments, the examination of the yield and quality (ingredients, sensory) as well as the resistance to fungal diseases (e.g. Alternaria ssp.). From the second year of the project an examination of the potential new carrot lines under practical conditions in organic farms are planned. The practical trials in the organic farms will be managed by the Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft, Forsten und Gartenbau (LLFG-Sachsen-Anhalt). Through the project approach in the satimex company a sustainable carrot breeding for the organic farming will be established. From the developed carrot lines should be notified at least one line to the plant variety rights.
