Collaborative project: Prevention of heat stress by individualized means and means of genetic selection in dairy farming - subproject A (DigiMuh)

Project

Project code: 281C207A19
Contract period: 01.03.2021 - 29.02.2024
Budget: 255,117 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal welfare, monitoring, cattle, prevention, digital world, animal breeding, precision livestock farming

Data from various digital applications, barn and animal-specific data, will be merged into a complete system by means of interfaces (independent of the manufacturer) in order to better manage, analyze, and interpret the individual information of the previous isolated applications and make them available to farmers in the form of a flexible and application-oriented decision support system. A comprehensive sensor and data network with an innovative data and evaluation platform (edge computing) is being developed for this purpose. A clearly arranged PC application or smartphone-/ tablet app provides animal-specific forecasts and alarms for the targeted prevention of heat stress and integrated health monitoring and gives recommendations for action and management decisions for timely countermeasures. This set-up will allow early action and differentiated intervention thus directly leading to significant improvements in animal welfare, animal health, and productive life of dairy cows. A long-term goal is also the sustainable improvement of heat stress tolerance by means of genetic selection and is based on the extensive phenotypic and genotypic data thus providing tools for selection decisions. In addition to the numerous short-term and long-term advantages for the animal, there is also a reduced workload for the farmer and cost savings (e.g. veterinary costs, performance losses, salaries). The R&D project DigiMuh aims to develop an innovative prototype and to increase the innovative ability and international competitiveness including knowledge transfer while taking into account the social and legal framework conditions as well as to ensure a sustainable and animal-friendly agricultural and food economy.
