Collaborative project: Barrier System for Avian Influenza in Free-range Poultry Farming – Subproject 4

Project

Project code: 2813201106
Contract period: 01.12.2007 - 31.08.2010
Budget: 356,133 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The appearance of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses in Europe presents an immense problem for poultry farms, particularly with free-range husbandry. No medical treatment is available, and wide-range culling is enforced by law. As a consequence, HPAI has profound economic impact on both conventional and organic poultry farming. In areas with high risk of HPAI infection, livestock are required by law to be kept in housings. If done properly, this can reduce infections via direct wild animal contact. On the other hand, indirect transmission such as by humans or farm equipment as passive vectors is not avoided by keeping the birds indoors. The aim of this project is the development of a barrier system, protecting poultry from infections both via direct contact with wild birds and also indirect routes via passive vectors. The barrier system is expected to ensure both consumer safety as well as reduction of economic risks due to avian influenza for poultry farmers.
