Collaborative project: Utilisation of new resources of resistance in the genus Gaultheria against the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides - Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2814101506
Contract period: 01.03.2007 - 31.03.2010
Budget: 83,307 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Gaultheria procumbens can be considerably affected by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Several disease symptoms like brownish-black lesions on stems and partially on leaves, shoot wilting and dieback as well as fruit rot were observed. 141 Gaultheria genotypes (29 G. procumbens accessions, 112 accessions of 40 different Gaultheria species) were collected for investigations on resistance. Thirty isolates of C. gloeosporioides were established and characterized molecularly to analyze their phylogeny. The virulence of all isolates was proved on G. procumbens seedlings three times. The isolates could be classified as weak, moderate and high virulent. A weak and a high virulent isolate were used for further resistance tests on other Gaultheria genotypes. Two of them showed tolerance against C. gloeosporioides. The pollen fertility of the Gaultheria species was defined for interspecific crosses. G. procumbens was used as both parents, male and female, in interspecific crosses. Some interspecific hybrids exist now and are verified by molecular analysis. A vegetatively propagation of Gaultheria by inducing axillary shoots was established.
